There are groups of burial mounds in the Gerolfinger oak forest. These grave monuments of the Bronze and early Iron Ages are silent witnesses of the Ingolstadt prehistory. Unaffected by the passage of time, they lie in the forest and are powerful places full of mysticism.
As on the Vierufschanze Neufahrn, there is a Christian martyr on one of the burial mounds. It was built there in order to apparently take the strength from this prehistoric place (see also "Christian symbols on prehistoric monuments")

In October 1933, the Ingolstadt Historical Association, together with the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments, explored one of the large hills. Back then, alongside main teacher Drexl from Gerolfing, Dr. Josef Reichart was significantly involved in the planning and execution of the excavations. The head of excavation was provided by the State Office for Monument Conservation. The hill was first divided into quadrants as planned. During the excavation, earth profiles were left to document the structure of the hill.
Archeology is also "spade research". But the spade is just one of the many tools that the historian can use to trace the legacy of bygone days. The "pioneers" of Ingolstadt archeology can serve as good examples. With great respect for the legacy of the past, they mostly avoided "putting the spade on themselves".
