    A Renaissance castle in the middle of the floodplain forest!
    The castle complex in the Auwald is a fine example of the German early Renaissance and was built between 1530 and 1555 as "Old Building" and "New Building". In the "old building" with high stair gables and tower with brightly glazed bricks we find the most important secular Renaissance frescoes in Bavaria. With the themes "hunting" and "love" they decorate the representative and living rooms of the count palatine Ottheinrich. In addition, the floodplain information center has been located in the basement of the castle since April 2009. It provides clear information about floodplains and their habitats, their development and their importance for flood and nature conservation.

        The Floodplain Information Center has been housed in the castle's basement since April 2009. The floodplain forest is part of the Altmühltal Nature Park. It provides vivid information about river floodplains and their habitats, their development, and their importance for flood protection and nature conservation.

          Great castle that can be visited. Hiking or cycling tours can be started from the castle. A little north you go to the Danube and on the way there are many lakes where many waterfowl make their home. A great landscape to switch off from everyday life.

                Beautifully renovated castle. Unfortunately you can't get into the garden behind the striking tower. But there is an exhibition about the Danube floodplain forest at the front. Unfortunately no café.

                      The Wittelsbach Count Palatine Ottheinrich had this palace built for his wife Susanna as a token of love in the early Renaissance style. Located in the middle of the largest contiguous alluvial forest area in Central Europe, it was originally built as a moated castle. The ditches have now silted up and instead of Susanna, the floodplain information center now resides in several rooms of the palace.

                      The castle can only be visited from the outside, as the interior is not open to the public.
