The Brandenburg Gate is the most famous Berlin landmark. The gate is crowned by a sculpture called the Quadriga. This is a work designed by the sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow. Until the fall of the Iron Curtain, it stood directly on the border between East and West Berlin and thus symbolized the meeting of the Warsaw Pact and NATO during the Cold War at the most sensitive point in world politics on their common border.

The Brandenburg Gate was built in 1789. The gate is the only surviving from last 18 Berlin city gates. The crowning sculpture of the Quadriga (four-in-hand) is particularly beautiful, a Berlin highlight.

The Brandenburg Gate has evolved from a memorial of division to a symbol of German unity. Its original purpose had nothing to do with politics.
The sandstone Brandenburg Gate is one of the largest and most beautiful creations of German classicism. It was created between 1788 and 1791 based on designs by Carl Gotthard Langhans the Elder, who was strongly inspired by the Propylaea of the Athenian Acropolis. King Friedrich Wilhelm II had previously ordered the construction of the Brandenburg Gate, as he was looking for a dignified architectural finish for the boulevard Unter den Linden.

The Brandenburg Gate, a landmark of Berlin, should be visited early in the morning if you want a little peace and quiet to take in it.

This monumental gate "Unter den Linden" stood for a long time unreachable between West and East. Since the turn it can be reached on the impressive street "Unter den Linden". On the way there you happen u.a. the Alexander von Humboldt University and other historically and culturally valuable buildings. In the vicinity of the Brandenburg Gate, however, there is a lot of excitement, demonstrations, etc.

The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin is one of the city's most important landmarks.
Berlin's only surviving city gate, which once primarily represented the division of the city into East and West, has been a symbol of German unity since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The sandstone building is also one of the finest examples of German Classicism.

Years long symbol of the German division (hardly aware of the younger generation ...) it is today one of the most important landmarks of the city. On a visit to Berlin a "must have"!

The monumental Brandenburg Gate can look back on a 200-year history. If it was a symbol of the division of Berlin and Germany until 1989, today it is a national symbol of unity and thus one of the city's most famous landmarks.

A piece of history that should not be missed on a visit to Berlin. For me always closely connected with the streets June 17 and Unter den Linden, the Hotel Astor and the view of the column.

The Brandenburg Gate was built from 1788 to 1791 according to plans by Carl Gotthard Langhans and is modeled on the gate buildings (Propylaea) of the Acropolis in Athens.
Six Doric columns on each side are in front of the eleven meter deep crossbeams.
In 1793, the quadriga designed by Johann Gottfried Schadow was placed on the Brandenburg Gate. It tells its own story: In 1806, Napoleon brought the quadriga to Paris as a symbol of his triumph. In 1814, after the victory over the French emperor, it returned to its original place in Berlin.
It has always faced east towards the city center.
With the division of Germany and the construction of the Wall in 1961, the Brandenburg Gate was in the restricted area and was inaccessible to Berliners and visitors. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, 100,000 people attended the official opening of the Brandenburg Gate on December 22, 1989 – and shortly thereafter celebrated the first New Year's Eve together. Even today, the Brandenburg Gate stands like no other landmark for reunified Berlin.
