Burned out during the war, the University of Münster is now housed in the castle. A visit to the inner premises is therefore not worthwhile. The botanical garden at the back is worth seeing. In summer, a large flea market takes place on certain dates on the promenade in front of the castle.

"... Münster Castle is of course a must when visiting Münster. It is an extremely good starting point for a stroll through the streets of the city. There are numerous sights in the immediate vicinity that you should allow some time to visit.

From the prince-bishop's residence to the university
Münster Castle was the prince-bishop's residence until 1803. Architect Johann Conrad Schlaun erected the baroque building for Münster's penultimate prince-bishop, Maximilian Friedrich von Königsegg-Rothenfels.
The 91 meter long three-wing complex with a five-axis central projection is elegantly designed through the use of red brick and light sandstone. In 1945 the castle was totally bombed, between 1947 and 1953 it was rebuilt according to old plans, at least in its external form. ..."
