Not much remains of the once mighty castle complex. Niesten Castle was first documented in 1127. In 1190, it passed into the hands of the noble Andechs-Meranier family.
The Peasants' War of 1530 left the castle severely damaged, as did the Thirty Years' War. After the last bailiff moved to the Neydecker House in Weismain in 1710, the castle finally stood empty.
In 1747, it was in a state of severe disrepair. The Niesten community attempted to save the castle in 1830. However, demolition continued in 1872. The last major remains of the castle collapsed in 1882.

In 1997, the people of Niesten began to clear the heavily overgrown small plateau of the former castle. The iron flag bearing the Andechs-Merani coat of arms was installed. In gratitude that this was done without incident, the Niesten Chapel Building Association erected the wayside cross on the plateau.
