The lords of Heverlee built their first castle here in the 14th century. In the 16th century, the current castle was built in Renaissance style, and in the 19th century it received a major makeover in neo-Gothic style. In 1916, the Duke of Arenberg donated the domain to the university.

This green area on the outskirts of Leuven now belongs to KU Leuven and is the campus for Science and Technology.

The Arenbergs are a noble family from Leuven and part of the European aristocracy. In the 17th and 18th centuries, they pulled the diplomatic strings here and connected themselves with aristocratic families across Europe through ingenious moves and marriages, such as the Hohenzollerns and the Wittelsbachs.

One of their main residences was the magnificent Arenberg Castle in Heverlee, south of Leuven. Since the Duke of Arenberg donated the domain to the Catholic University of Leuven in 1916, aspiring engineers now study and research behind the magnificent facades of the castle, which is also the center of a green campus for science and technology.
