The castle was reconstructed at the beginning of the 20th century with much effort and is absolutely worth seeing. In good weather you have a fantastic view from here over the Rhine Valley to the Black Forest and in the other direction in the Vosges.

The Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg, as it towers over the valley today, dates back to the annexation of the Alsace in the Franco-Prussian War of 1871. The Stophanberch, on which the castle stands, had fallen together with some medieval ruins to the newly founded German Reich, and so it came that Kaiser Wilhelm II in the years 1901-1908 by the Berlin architect and castle researcher Bodo Ebhardt on these ruins a new built medieval-looking castle. On May 13, 1908, the inauguration took place in rainy weather.
