Saint Mary's Cathedral is the Roman Catholic cathedral in Sydney and the seat of the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Sydney.
The neo-Gothic building made of Hawkesbury sandstone is one of the largest churches in Australia, with its 74.6 m high towers it is only the fourth highest on the continent. The foundation stone for the first Gothic-style cathedral, St Mary's Cathedral, was laid in 1821 by Governor Lachlan Macquarie; however, it burned down in 1865. The foundation stone for the current cathedral was laid in 1868. Construction of the nave began in 1913, and the crypt was completed in 1961. Two towers planned by Wardell were not completed until 2000.
The funeral service for the late AC/DC guitarist Malcolm Young took place here on November 28, 2017.
