Franconian Switzerland is characterized by over 1000 previously known caves. They form because carbonated groundwater chemically dissolves limestones. The cave formation preferably starts at intersections of crevice systems and expands them in the direction of the outflowing karst water. In addition to the chemical lime solution, flowing water also has a mechanical effect on the formation of caves. Cave systems in limestone can thus be seen as a kind of underground landform.
