Der bereits 1902 im Rahmen der „Großen Industrie – Gewerbe und Kunstausstellung“ errichtete ursprüngliche neobarocke Kunstpalast wurde 1926 anlässlich der Gesolei (Große Ausstellung Düsseldorf 1926 für Gesundheitspflege, soziale Fürsorge und Leibesübungen) nach Westen zum Rhein hin um das Kunstmuseum erweitert, mit dessen Baukonzeption Wilhelm Kreis betraut war. Wilhelm Kreis integrierte Kunstpalast und Kunstmuseum in einer Dreiflügelanlage, die sich um den Ehrenhof mit einem zentralen Wasserbassin gruppiert. Die neobarocke Fassade des Kunstpalasts wurde umgewandelt und in der Gestaltung an die Gesamtanlage angepasst. Die Fassaden der Museumsbauten bestehen aus in gerippten Lagen gemauerten Ziegelwänden auf massiven Sockeln aus Muschelkalk. Fensterbänder aus Naturstein akzentuieren die Fassade. In der Mitte der Fassade springt jeweils ein Risalit hervor, das beim ehemaligen Kunstmuseum in der Portalzone wieder zurückspringt, während es beim ehemaligen Kunstpalast als Vorbau in Tuffstein ausgeführt ist.

Im Norden verbindet ein triumphbogenartiger Torbau mit der Monumentalplastik der Aurora von Arno Breker die Museumsbauten, nach Süden hin bleibt der Blick zur Tonhalle frei.
Ende der 1980er Jahre wurde der mittlerweile marode Kunstpalast abgerissen, wobei die denkmalgeschützte Fassade erhalten wurde. 1995 gewann Oswald Matthias Ungers den Wettbewerb zum Neubau des ehemaligen Kunstpalasts. Der Umbau erfolgte von 1999 bis 2000 und besteht aus drei Elementen: Einem zentralen Kuppelbau mit zwei flankierenden Skulpturenhöfen mit Glasdächern.

Mit der Eröffnung des Neubaus des Kunstpalastes wurde auch das Kunstmuseum innenarchitektonisch neu gestaltet, beide Museumsbauten wurden schließlich als „museum kunst palast“ zusammengeführt und werden ab 2011 als „Stiftung Museum Kunstpalast“ in Form einer Public Private Partnership zwischen der Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf, E.ON AG und METRO Group (Stand 2012) geführt.
