For 200 years, a ferry carried walkers across the Regnitz at this point. The village of Bug was a popular excursion destination. Ever since the opening of the café, which is still known today as the "Hotel Lieb", people made pilgrimages to Bug on Sundays. The steadily growing stream of visitors did not go unnoticed by the state and so the royal administrator of the grove, Stephan Freiherr von Stengel, decided to earn money from the Bambergers' enjoyment: in 1810, the ferry rights were leased to the highest bidder. The proceeds went towards maintaining the grove.
