In Hahnenklee, a tour around the Small & Large Crane Pond is definitely worthwhile. In winter, when the weather is cold, the Little Crane Pond is even open to ice. Both bodies of water are so-called storage ponds (recognizable on the southern bank of the Great Pond).
There is a nature / educational hiking trail around both ponds.

The Kranicher Teiche are located in the Kurpark of Hahnenklee. Both bodies of water are separated from each other by the dam of the smaller one and are connected to each other via the outflow of this Little Crane Pond. Normally, both Kranicher ponds have the same - maximum - water level.
The ponds were created in 1674 to store the service water needed to power the water wheels in the nearby silver mines. The dam of the Great Crane Pond is about 8.60 meters high and about 130 meters long. The well-preserved curry comb house is still located on this pond dam, which was built in the old way. This is no longer present in most of the other Upper Harz ponds built in the old pond construction method. During conversions, it was usually replaced by the harrow shaft, which required less maintenance and was therefore cheaper in the long run, which was integrated directly into the pond dam.
