Queen Isabella the Catholic ordered the construction of the Cathedral of Granada in 1505, shortly after the taking of the city, and chose for its location the place where the Royal Mosque of the Alhambra was located.
However, the scope of the project led to a search for a larger site and it was moved to the center of Granada, where the Great Mosque was located.

The Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of the Incarnation is an impressive Catholic temple in the Spanish city of Granada. It is the seat of the local archdiocese and one of the masterpieces of the Spanish Renaissance. The cathedral is dedicated to the mystery of the Incarnation of the Lord. Its construction began in 1526 and was completed in 1561 under the direction of the architect Diego de Siloé. The building combines Renaissance and Baroque elements, and its length is 116 meters with a width of 67 meters. 🌟

This cathedral is very different from all we have seen in the course of the journey in the big cities of Spain. So far, it was Gothic cathedrals, some with Roman remains, which were then further developed in the Baroque period. Especially noticeable was the big choir stalls built later, which stood in the middle of the nave and divided the room.
In Granada, it is a Renaissance cathedral with a single gothic portal to the Capila real (which unfortunately was closed, presumably gothic) and some baroque retables.
With its bright white and brilliant gold in the front part, it can be called a "cathedral of light".
In a way, it is similar to St. Peter's in Rome.

The Cathedral of Granada, main church of the Archdiocese of Granada, is a very large church building, mainly from the Renaissance period. The cathedral is 115 meters long and 67 meters wide. It is dedicated to the Virgin of the Incarnation.

The chancel is representative of the building's beauty. The chancel's dome is decorated with beautiful windows and sculptures and paintings by Alonso Cano. The three wonderful portals are Ecce Homo, San Jerónimo and El Perdón, the latter with excellent reliefs of Faith and Justice. The main façade is Baroque. The choir stalls are Plateresque. The side chapels contain excellent altarpieces and paintings. The former chapter house now houses the cathedral treasury. Some exhibits are on display in the sacristy and in the cathedral museum. Particularly noteworthy is an Immaculate Conception by Alonso Cano.

The interior is impressive in terms of height, light and whitewashed walls. Because the choir screen was removed at the beginning of the 20th century, there is an unobstructed view along the entire length of the cathedral.

The choir and side chapels of the cathedral, which are dedicated to various saints, are also of particular importance. The chapels contain valuable paintings and carvings, mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Many altars can be admired. The sacristy is also worth a visit!

The church is built close to the surrounding houses (or the other way around) and you will search in vain for an unobstructed view of the overall architecture.
Inside, on the other hand, there is a wide room with 5 naves, supported by mighty pillars.

Construction began at the express request of Queen Isabella, in the same place where the main mosque and later the church of Santa María de la O once stood. The original design is by Enrique Egas; however, the building was soon remodeled in the Renaissance style by Diego de Siloé.

The entrance fee is now €7. I think that's pretty ambitious 🙄.
Warning ⚠️: During our visit in August 2025, there were a lot of women in front of and around the cathedral trying to distribute rosemary sprigs. We saw people being stopped/detained.
The tourists wanted to give €2, but that wasn't enough; they wanted €5. A huge argument broke out.
It's best to just keep walking, but don't stop and get drawn into a conversation 😉.

The cathedral is the main building of actually three churches that blend into each other. To the right of the cathedral (when facing the main entrance) is the church Iglesia del Sagrario. And then, if you walk further around, the Royal Chapel of Granada, the burial site of Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand.

Underwhelming. Currently (04/25) partially covered in scaffolding. €7 admission. There are much more impressive churches for less or no money.

The cathedral is impressive because of its division into a main nave with two aisles each and its height. The white painted walls support this impression. The side chapels with their precious pictures and carved works of art are also worth seeing.

If the Alhambra didn't exist, the cathedral would certainly be the most important sight in Granada. It is definitely worth seeing and significant. You shouldn't miss a visit to the cathedral and the integrated Capilla Real.
