The three-storey double-gabled house is dated 1635 by wall anchors. All openings in the gables have stone surrounds. This also applies to the windows and door on the ground floor. Parts of old stone surrounds have been preserved on the first floor. In the left axis of the ground floor, two coupled windows mark the remains of a high stone cross window. At the back there is an impressive stair tower.
The customs officer sculpture by Bernhard Lohf is attached to the right front corner of the building. The house originally served as a customs house for collecting the customs that all ships that passed through Kaiserswerth had to pay between 1174 and 1803.

Customs House
The old customs house is the most magnificent building still in existence from the time before the destruction of Kaiserswerth in the War of the Spanish Succession in 1702.
On the courtyard side there is still the tower from which the customs officers controlled shipping traffic on the Rhine.

The old customs house in Kaiserswerth, a district of Düsseldorf, was built in 1635. The building with the address Markt 4 is a protected architectural monument. The customs house is located directly at the old ferry point next to the former Rhine gate. The ground floor and the back of the stately house have been significantly altered. Two gables of different sizes structure the street front. The customs officer controlled the shipping traffic on the Rhine from the tower room in the rear staircase extension.
