Ribe experienced the highest water level, 6m above normal flood, in 1634, which can be read from the top ring of the column (The Burchardi Flood or Second Grote Mandränke). At that time around 8,000 people and several thousand cattle drowned. Even in the cathedral the water was 1.70 m high. The water level from 1634 is marked on the pillar behind the pulpit.
The first Grote Mandränke, as the storm surge of 1362 is called, is the oldest storm surge disaster that we know a lot about. However, it is not known how high the water level was and is therefore not marked on the storm surge column.
