This sanctuary is dedicated to Kuroda Nagamasa, the first lord of the Chikuzen Kuroda clan, and his father Josui. The name of the temple is derived from their two Buddhist names. The shrine was originally located under the main tower of Fukuoka Castle. In 1871, it was relocated to the site near what is now Kego Park when the Meiji government abolished the old administrative system and introduced the current prefectural system, and later to its current location. Near the shrine there is an observatory from which you have a beautiful panoramic view of Hakata Bay. The shrine is also considered one of the top 100 cherry blossom viewing places in Japan and attracts many visitors in the spring.
