The town hall next to the cathedral can be described as the second imposing building. In the first half of the 14th century, the citizens of Aachen established a new town hall under the leadership of their acting mayor Gerhard Chorus (1285-1367) as a sign of their civil liberty. Until then, the mid-13th century Grashaus had served as the town hall.

Charlemagne (748-814) built a monumental palace in Aachen around 800, which, after his imperial coronation in Rome, he chose not only as his favorite palace but also as his center of power. On the foundations of the palace's northern boundary, the former Royal Hall, stands Aachen's Town Hall, where the city's fortunes are still determined today.
