The Elisenbrunnen fountain in Aachen was named in honor of a princess. Elisabeth Ludovika, known as Elise, the daughter of the Bavarian King Maximilian I. On November 29, 1823, she married the future Prussian King Frederick William IV. On the occasion of this wedding, the Aachen city council decided to name the fountain, completed a few years later, after the bride. A bust in the fountain's rotunda still commemorates the beautiful princess today.

The Elisengarten is a small park in the city center of Aachen on the back side of the Elisenbrunnen. The Elisengarten was created from 1852 to 1854 according to plans by the Prussian master builder Peter Joseph Lenné.
In 2006, the Aachen city council commissioned a competition to redesign the Elisengarten.
In the run-up to the redesign, extensive archaeological excavations took place from August 2008 to February 2009. Settlement and craft places from five millennia have been proven.
A 160 m² archaeological showcase, based on plans by the Aachen architecture office 'kadawittfeldarchitektur', makes a 60 m² large part of the excavations permanently visible.

Not far from the cathedral is this pavilion with excavations on the settlement history in Aachen. On the small area there are stone witnesses from different eras over the period of about 2000 years.
