Agathaberg is a district and one of the seven church villages of Wipperfürth. It lies on the watershed between Gaulbach and Sülz.
First documented in 1477 and in a "contract of Wipperfürth pastor on the use of offerings for the new chapel St. Agatha at Dierdorf". Notation First name: Sent Agathen. Even today, the locals use this term, but in the slightly modified form Zintagen.
Church of St. Agatha
After 1465 Wipperfürth was repeatedly destroyed by a city fire, the then pastor Vollmar and the citizens vowed in honor of St. Agatha (including patroness against fire) a pilgrimage to her burial ground after Catana in Sicily.
In 1474, Pastor Vollmar had a wooden chapel built for the glory of God and Saint Agatha on a hill in the parish of Wipperfürth, near the village of Dierdorf. In Dierdorf, today subdivided into Unterdierdorf and Oberdierdorf, was then a chapel.
Farmers and forest workers settled around the chapel in Agathaberg due to deforestation and the extraction of arable land.
End of the 19th century, the chapel was no longer sufficient for the now more than 1,200 inhabitants counting community and so in 1894 plans were made for today's Gothic Revival church. The Cologne architect Heinrich Renard delivered the plans for the three-nave nave (construction 1895/1896). The consecration took place in 1903.
Facilities include u. a. a carved pulpit (early 16th century), sculptures of Our Lady (1st half of the 14th century) and St. Maternus (1st half of the 15th century). In 1961, remnants of lime-secco mural painting were uncovered during renovations (16th century).
Around the church is a (restored) Stationsweg from 1867.
