The dam was built in the years 1905 to 1908 as drinking water dam by the city of Remscheid. Several stone tools from the Stone Age were found.

The capacity is six million cubic meters. The brook Neye is stowed. The concrete dam is a curved gravity dam made of quarry stone masonry according to the Intze principle.

The reservoir can be hiked in about three hours. The paths run along the water and lead exclusively through the forest. The shortest way to circle the dam is about 11 miles long and is very popular with joggers and walkers. Nearby are the larger Bevertalsperre and the small Schevelinger or Silbertalsperre. From the Silbertalsperre an underground tunnel leads to the Neyetalsperre and from there to Bevertalsperre, known as the Bever Block. Built as a drinking water dam and used for many years dam is operated since 2004 as a service water dam. Only in acute water scarcity should it be taken again drinking water.

Today the EWR GmbH, the energy subsidiary of Stadtwerke Remscheid GmbH, owner of the Neyetalsperre, the management is the responsibility of the Wupperverband.

Even if the Neyetalsperre serves purely as a drinking water reservoir and you are not allowed to swim in it, you can hike around it wonderfully. The shore path leads around the water for eleven kilometers in about three hours. You usually walk very close to the water and through the forest, with a lot of peace and without hectic swimming in summer. At dusk, a very special spectacle can also be observed here: the flight of bats. The Neyetalsperre is known as a popular hunting ground for water bats and noctule bats.
