                        The Harzer Hexenstieg (official spelling: Harzer-Hexen-Stieg) is a hiking trail almost 100 km long that leads from Osterode through the Harz over the Brocken to Thale. Two alternative routes are also offered: the Brocken bypass from Torfhaus via St. Andreasberg and Braunlage (32.3 km), and the Köhlerpfad south of the Rappbode Dam from Königshütte via Hasselfelde (23.8 km).
                        The total route network is 152 km.
                        It is a project of the Harz Tourism Association e.V. and the Harz Club and is included in the Harz hiking pin system with 28 stamp stations and its own theme badge.
                        The quality hiking trail, which has been certified since 2007, connects the federal states of Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt and leads through the districts of Göttingen, Goslar and Harz.
                        The Hexenstieg crosses the Harz National Park between Altenau and Drei-Annen-Hohne. In 2009, the Hexenstieg was a founding member of the marketing cooperation Top Trails of Germany.
                        In autumn 2013, the Central German long-distance hiking trail celebrated its tenth anniversary and in 2023 its twentieth anniversary.

                            At this point, hikers on the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg really have to be careful not to just walk straight ahead. The path goes briefly along the road on the right. We missed a signpost and accidentally walked across the Polstertal and were surprised why we didn't see any more signs. But since we wanted to go shopping in Altenau anyway, we didn't turn around and continued along the Polstertal. I've heard several times that this has happened to hikers on the HHS. So it's better to be a bit more careful than I am. If you want to go to Altenau, you can just carry on straight ahead, but then you skip the part of the Dammgraben up to the Rose.

                                      Starting point for beautiful hikes. Do not use the old path to the water reservoir, it is completely overgrown/blocked by fallen trees. Please take the small detour via the path to the left of the bus stop.
