In 1158, the town of Walegotsa was first mentioned in a donation document from Henry the Lion. This document assigned Walegotsa, today's Walksfelde, to the diocese of Ratzeburg as an endowment. A beautiful historic place in the middle of the forest that I like to stop by every now and then. The approximately 3 m high castle hill formerly had a wooden tower. One therefore also speaks of tower hill castles or, after the French "château à motte", of moths. The hill is surrounded by a deeply cut ring-shaped moat. In the west the castle is additionally protected by a rampart with a moat. Access is assumed to be from the west side via a bridge. During excavations in 1911, post holes were discovered on the top of the motte, providing evidence of an approximately square wooden tower in plan. Castles of this type are dated to the mid-13th to mid-14th centuries. A smaller castle hill, located 130 m to the northeast, dates from around the same time. A square fieldstone foundation measuring 5 x 5 m was uncovered on this hill. Large amounts of burnt clay and woodwork as well as large iron nails also suggest a defensive tower here. Straight ditches attached to both castles indicate attached outer bailey-like farmyards.
