The city of Meldorf owes its special character as the “cathedral city in the heart of Dithmarschen” to the St. Johannes Church, popularly known as the “Dathmarscher Cathedral”. Today's church building was built in the 13th century as a representative building in the brick Gothic style. It is a three-aisled basilica with a transept and choir. After a fire in 1866, the tower was rebuilt to its current height of 59 meters. On the outside, the building corresponds to a neo-Gothic building from the 19th century, inside it is still Gothic in the style of the construction period (Wikipedia).

The St. Johannis Church - also called Meldorfer Dom - is a magnificent early Gothic building. No matter from which direction visitors come to Meldorf, the first thing they see is the St. Johannis Church. Because of its size, the church is also called "Dithmarsch Cathedral", but Meldorf has never been a bishopric. The church was built around 1250 and is one of the most beautiful buildings in northern Germany. The church used to serve as a navigation mark, because Meldorf was once on the North Sea coast. Only through land reclamation is it around six kilometers to the sea today.
