Where the Elbe flows today, there used to be Alt-Brunsbüttel. For centuries, the serious dike breaches in the Brunsbüttel area have been a result of the shift of the Elbe river channel northwards towards Brunsbüttel. The town, which was moved inland as a result, was badly hit by the series of storm surges in 1717/20. That was when the Braake (break) was created. It was not until 1762 that an Elbe dike was rebuilt, i.e. the Braake was dammed, a sluice was built and the Brunsbüttel “Neuen Koog” was closed. The “Alte Hafen” was built in front of the dike sluice, where the Braake flows into the Elbe. Officially it was called Neuenkoogshafen. Later it and the district that developed there were called Brunsbüttelhafen. Boatmen, traders, craftsmen and workers lived here. There was a lot of freight traffic; There was also passenger shipping to Dithmarschen ports, to the other side of the Elbe and later to Hamburg.
