The special vegetation on the sandy soil has its own fascinating flair.

In the immediate vicinity of the two Wendelinus Chapels, precisely in Mainz territory, is the Wendelinus Home, which for many years was owned by the Catholic Youth Work and used as a youth recreation center. Today, it is privately owned by the Children's Forest Academy. The building was originally built around 1840 as the "Ludwigshöhe" forester's lodge at another location in the Lenneberg Forest. From around 1880, the sale of beverages was permitted there, and it developed into a popular tourist destination. In 1913, Baron Martin Wilhelm von Waldthausen (1875–1928) acquired the forester's lodge and the surrounding forest to better shield his Waldthausen Castle from the outside world. The Baron had the forester's lodge demolished and rebuilt next to the two Wendelinus Chapels. Since 1930, the building belonged to the Catholic Youth Work of the Diocese of Mainz. Due to fire safety deficiencies, the Wendelinus Home was closed in 2015. Eventually the house was sold.

The two Wendelinus chapels in Budenheim stand in the Lenneberg Forest, directly on the border with Mainz-Gonsenheim. The chapels are dedicated to Saint Wendelin and were completed in 1776 and 1866, respectively. The Wendelinusheim retirement home is located in the immediate vicinity of the two chapels, but already within the city limits of Mainz.

St. John's Church is the oldest church in Mainz, serving as a bishop's church until 1036 and as the coronation church of two German kings, in 1002 and 1024. Archaeological excavations have been taking place in this church for the past 10 years. Currently, the finds are being preserved and structural work is underway.

The Schlossplatz (known as Place de la Liberté during the French period) changed its name frequently depending on the political situation, and since 1899, it bore the name of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse and by Rhine for a long time. On April 3, 2018, Helmut Kohl (died 1987) would have turned 88, and in his honor as former Minister-President of Rhineland-Palatinate and Chancellor of German Unity, part of the square was renamed Helmut Kohl Square in his memory. With its lush flowerbeds, the square is a popular place to gather.
