Beautiful spot, with a view of Lake Laach. The mofettes are bubbling merrily away. And if my nose isn't deceiving me, you can even smell something. Maybe it was just my dog farting 😉. The gases are said to be odorless and not entirely harmless.

During the summer months, suitable photo spots are scarce, as the lake is only visible from the bike path through the trees. But there are these little hotspots.

The oval lake, with an area of approximately 3.3 km² and a water depth of more than 50 m, is the largest lake in Rhineland-Palatinate. Lake Laach and the surrounding lands are owned by the Maria Laach Abbey.

Mofettes at Lake Laach demonstrate: The Laacher See volcano, Europe's youngest, didn't go extinct 13,000 years ago; it's just dormant. That's what volcanologists say. And indeed, on the eastern shore of the lake, it's bubbling like a glass of mineral water. Mass amounts of CO2 bubbles rise here, and there's a faint smell of sulfur. Even though only the upper part of the quarry is visible, it is still a beautiful geological outcrop.

Lake Laach in the eastern Volcanic Eifel, near Maria Laach Abbey in the municipality of Glees, is the largest lake in Rhineland-Palatinate. It formed in the caldera of the Laach volcano after its last eruption, which was initially dated to 10,930 BC. Following radiocarbon dating of buried tree trunks carried out in 2021, the date of this eruption was corrected to 11,056 BC; doubts about the accuracy of the new dating have not yet been confirmed. While walking around Lake Laach and then visiting the abbey, you can put together an entire year's calendar from countless great photos.

The lake "Maria Laach" is a volcanic crater. It is not an extinct volcano, it is still active. You can still see it clearly in some areas of the shore, where gas bubbles rise from the so-called "mofettes".
