Aulenbach was a village in the Birkenfeld district in Rhineland-Palatinate on the extreme western edge of what is now Baumholder military training area. It was destroyed during the construction of the Wehrmacht military training area in 1937 and its inhabitants were forcibly resettled. Parts of the district were incorporated into the community of Reichenbach, the remaining part became part of the Baumholder estate and, after its dissolution in early 1994, became the town of Baumholder. Regarding the church, Aulenbach most recently belonged to the protestant parish of Baumholder. The Clarahall barite mine was located in the district of Aulenbach, which was relocated to the district of the neighboring community of Ruschberg when the military training area was set up. During the Second World War, a labor camp for around 450 Soviet prisoners of war (Aulenbach camp) was set up in the Aulenbach district from autumn 1941, most of whom came from Stalag 356 (Senne). After the end of the war, the Eastern European forced laborers from the wider area were centralized here and barracked in the camp (displaced persons). To commemorate the people who died in the camp during imprisonment and in the post-war period, a high stone pyramid was erected in the district after 1945 as a memorial ("Russian memorial").
