Schloßstraße 41 The buildings opposite the town hall are also interesting. From 1828, the post office was located at Schloßstraße 43, until 1888, when the imposing brick building with its neo-Gothic stepped gable was opened for use. At that time, it still bore the inscription "Imperial Post and Telegraph Office." The post office abandoned this building at the end of the 1990s. Today, citizens can conduct most of their administrative business there. The town hall has been located here since the city's founding in 1876. From 1884 to 1935, the savings bank was housed here with one room. There was a detention and prison cell, and for many years the mayors also had their apartments in this building or in the neighboring building at Schloßstraße 36. Until around 1817, the brick building housed the papier-mâché factory, built around 1770 and known across national borders. Old, unusable paper was processed here into beautiful busts, statues, reliefs, wallpaper moldings, and consoles, and then gilded. Evidence of this art can be found today in the castle and the town church. Even from afar, a single two-story building stands out on the church square. This house, at number 13, formerly housed the institution for the deaf and dumb, established in 1840. Previously, the court chaplain (1785–1795) Dr. Passow and the poet Walter Pegel lived here.
