Ahlbeck is the easternmost and largest of the three imperial seaside resorts on the island of Usedom and lies directly on the border with the Polish town of Świnoujście. It boasts a well-maintained promenade, green spaces, a wide Baltic Sea beach, and few new buildings that would detract from the resort's historical character.

It lies on the former border between the two countries and is the longest coastal pedestrian and cycle path in Europe. It connects the German seaside resort of Ahlbeck with the Polish city of Świnoujście (Swinemünde) and passes through three imperial seaside resorts dating back to the Prussian era: Bansin, Heringsdorf, and Ahlbeck. The promenade stretches for a total length of 12 km.

The municipality of Ostseebad Heringsdorf lies in the east of the island of Usedom, bordering the Polish part of the island. It is situated between the Baltic Sea to the northeast, the Schmollensee and Gothensee lakes to the southwest, and the Wolgastsee lake to the south. The geography of the three towns is defined by their location between the Baltic Sea and the lakes. The built-up areas lie at an elevation of approximately 6 meters above sea level. Heringsdorf serves as a basic center for its surrounding area. The facilities of the neighboring town of Swinemünde are comparable to those of a medium-sized center. North of Bansin lies a 600-hectare mixed forest area with three hills: Langer Berg and Platter Berg, each at 54 meters above sea level, and Schäferberg at 41 meters above sea level.
