6月 15, 2025, Kasteel Waardenburg
The castle itself is not open to the public. It's hard to find a good view when the trees are in leaf. It's barely visible from the gate, and even from the dike, it's only partially visible.

It is a beautiful, wooded area located along the banks of the Waal. Containing two special buildings, Waardenburg Castle and Huis Neerijnen. Both with a moat and Huis Neerijnen even with a drawbridge and a coach house. And of course with beautiful stories. The castle, originally called 'Klingelenburg', was a residential tower with defensive functions. Around 1350, knight Gijsbert de Cock had this first noble house built in Neerijnen. Almost certainly on the elevated and moated site. Together with the Waardenburg castle, built in 1265 on behalf of Rudolph de Cock, it forms one estate. The residents of Neerijnen Castle used the name De Cock van Neerijnen. After the De Cock family, several families owned the estate, including Van Aylva. In 1769, Hobbe van Aylva had a front door frame installed in rococo style with a memorial stone attached to himself. Source: mijngelderland.nl

Amerongen Castle is a beautiful 'House' from the seventeenth century. The House, the garden and inventory form a unit that is not often found in the Netherlands. Amerongen Castle has a rich family history of 700 years. The castle is surrounded by historical gardens and is located at the foot of the picturesque village of Amerongen.

The robust medieval Waardenburg Castle has been standing on an old arm of the Waal for about 750 years. It is part of Estate Waardenburg en Neerijnen. It is one of the few polygonal castles in the Netherlands. The castle has been hit by war violence several times in its existence and has recovered. After it was also heavily damaged in the Second World War, GLK (Geldersch Landscape Castles) has done everything possible for decades to save the unique building and eventually restore it respectfully. A special feature is that from the beginning of 1945 the castle also served as an emergency home for families from Waardenburg and the surrounding area who could not return to their homes. After the liberation, the evacuated families continued to live on Waardenburg until 1957.

Today the Kasteel is used as an office, along with the former building yard behind it - it's still very nice inside, even if that hasn't made access any easier.

After the end of the First World War, from 11 November 1918, Bentinck gave shelter to the German Emperor Wilhelm II at Amerongen Castle at the request of the then Queen's Commissioner, Jonkheer Schelto van Citters. He stayed at Amerongen Castle for a year and a half and signed his deed of abdication here. In May 1920 he moved to nearby Huis Doorn. During his stay at Amerongen Castle, adjutant Sigurd von Ilsemann, who traveled to the Netherlands with the ex-emperor, got to know the Count's daughter and married her in 1920. After Wilhelm II's death in 1941, he and his wife moved into the castle.

Rossum Castle is a castle in the northeast of the village of Rossum of the same name. An exact construction date is not known, but it was probably built in the 13th century as a country residence for the Van Rossum family. The original castle was completely destroyed in the 16th century during the siege of Zaltbommel in 1599. In 1740, the remains were demolished to make way for a (smaller) steward's castle. In 1850, the then owner, Baron Van Randwijck, demolished the steward's castle and built a country residence with coach house on this site. From 1949 to 2002, the building was owned by the municipality of Rossum and used as a town hall. Since then it has been used as an office.

It is no longer the castle that it was originally. That's because it was demolished a few times and there was a fire, or just decay. Of course, many castles are subject to change, but that has certainly and radically happened with this one. Still, it looks nice, with that white look.

The foundation date of Waardenburg Castle is known exactly. On August 2, 1265, permission was given to build a tower. After that, the castle was gradually expanded. The current castle is from the 17th century. Many authentic elements can still be found in the castle. One of these is the fascinating Faust Room. Oijen Castle was located east of the North Brabant village of Oijen. Today, a few outbuildings remain. This castle was built in 1361 by order of Mary of Brabant, daughter of Duke John III of Brabant. It was intended as an outpost on the Maas to protect against raids by the Gelderse. When Maria died childless in 1399, the manor of Oijen and the castle fell to the Duke of Gelre. www.wikipedia.nl
