Beautiful unobstructed views of the Rur upstream and downstream from this pedestrian/bicycle bridge. The Roertunnel on the A73 begins a few meters from here. With a length of 2.45 km, it is one of the longest land tunnels for road traffic in the Netherlands. Opened in 2008 after 5 years of construction. The A73 motorway is an important connection in Limburg between Venlo and Roermond. The tunnel was built to relieve the Roerdal nature reserve near Roermond - and passes under the Roer and residential areas to the southeast of Roermond. The tunnel runs under the Roer river and reaches its deepest point there: -12 m. The construction of the tunnel in the river was complex. After all, the Roer had to continue to flow undisturbed. To ensure that no groundwater reaches the motorway, around 19,000 m² of groundwater barrier foil with a thickness of 1.3 m was laid during construction. To prevent the foil from floating, a layer of sand was applied. The road was then further completed using foil construction. The tunnel consists of 2 tunnel tubes, separated by an escape corridor. Between Venlo and Maasbracht there are two lanes in both directions without a hard shoulder. Maximum speed: 100 km/h In addition to the Roer tunnel, the Swalmen tunnel is also part of the A73. In 2019, local operation of both tunnels was transferred to the Southern Netherlands Traffic Control Center in Helmond. The tunnels are operated and monitored 24 hours a day from the traffic control center. Traffic jams in a tunnel are dangerous. That is why we want to prevent traffic jams in the Roer tunnel. With tunnel dosing, we limit the number of vehicles entering the tunnel. With the help of traffic management systems, we ensure that traffic jams do not end in the tunnel, but in front of it.
