運河ルートを通ってニューリーに入ると、戦没者への印象的な追悼の場であるニューリー戦争記念碑が迎えてくれます。この記念碑は、本物の25ポンド砲によって特徴づけられています。この砲は第二次世界大戦の象徴であり、世界的な紛争における地元の人々の勇気と犠牲を象徴しています。砲について：これは、第二次世界大戦中の主要なイギリスの野戦砲であり、その汎用性と機動性で知られるOrdnance QF 25ポンド砲です。

ニューリー運河の遊歩道沿いのざわめく木々の中には、静かな水門番小屋の遺跡があります。かつて、ここは水路の誇り高く賑やかな中心であり、水門番が通過する艀のために運河の重い木製の扉を操作するために昼夜を問わず待機していました。今日では、頑丈な石壁だけが残っており、ゆっくりと自然に覆われています。

Poyntzpassの南にある静かな運河区間で、水路沿いの道が狭い水路に沿ってまっすぐに伸びています。岸辺は低い木々や生け垣でわずかに覆われており、この区間に親密で緑豊かな印象を与えています。水はほとんど静止しており、開けた農地の風景を直線に横切っています。均一で交通のない区間で、水路沿いの道でのんびりとした距離を走るのに理想的です。

There is something enchanted about this old, dilapidated stone hut - as if it were whispering stories of times gone by, when the canal was still full of life and the lock keepers worked here day and night. The walls, overgrown with greenery and moss, show how nature is slowly reclaiming its place. The building itself is only a ruin, but that is precisely what makes it somehow interesting. The mixture of broken brickwork and wild growth has something melancholic about it that fits perfectly into the tranquility of the surroundings. Right next to it there is a small rest area with a bench - ideal for stopping for a moment and taking in the atmosphere.

This cycle and walking route from the Bann Bridge in Portadown to the Town Hall in Newry is a 20 mile trip on part of route 9 of the National Cycle Network. The route follows the towpath on the western bank of the, now non-navigable, Newry Canal. Here's a bit about the Canals history. Built to transport coal from Coalisland in County Tyrone to Dublin via Lough Neagh, Portadown, Newry and the Irish Sea, the Newry Canal was opened in 1742. It operated for almost 200 years until it fell into disuse following the growth of the railway network. Frequent interpretation boards along the way give information about the history of the canal. You will also find lots of art pieces along the route including Sustrans commissioned Millennium Mileposts and a series of pieces which reflect the former work and nature of the Newry Canal.

Now in ruins, the lock keeper's cottage is a good reminder of the important industrial history of the canal and the vital roles played by those who worked on it.

We rode over 20km on this quiet, smooth and traffic free path. Nice spots to see some wildlife and enjoy a picnic. Highly recommend
