To escape the rigors of the spa treatments in Schlangenbad from time to time, spa guests in the 18th and 19th centuries would head to Rauenthal, famous for its wine bars. Alcohol sales in Schlangenbad were strictly regulated. Since the road leading there was narrow and barely passable for carriages, guests were transported to Rauenthal on donkeys. The "Donkey Trail" hiking trail follows these tracks today.
