The ground station in the Michelbacher Apostelgarten is located on the Alzenau 3 cultural trail between Michelbach and the Herrnmühle in the Kahlgrund. The quartzitic mica schist, which is around 420 million years old and is found near Alzenau-Michelbach, is among the oldest rocks in Bavaria. The metamorphosed rocks in the immediate vicinity of the ground station are Silurian and have a brown to brown-violet color with partially mirror-like, shiny, smooth surfaces. The mica schist, which is relatively susceptible to weathering, is rarely found exposed in vineyards and is usually covered by a clayey weathering layer. The centuries-old viticulture has loosened the soil deeply (rigolt). The humus therefore often reaches a depth of 40 cm and shapes the topsoil in its current appearance.
