Built between 1200 and 1240, the exact date of construction of this Romanesque fieldstone church on a cruciform floor plan is unknown – Ice Age boulders were used locally. St. Crucis features Gothic-style alterations, including the choir apse in the east and the organ loft. Bricks were used for the first time during these construction projects, and these bricks were subsequently used extensively in the Margraviate of Brandenburg during the so-called Brick Gothic period.

Ziesar Castle is one of the few surviving bishop's residences in Brandenburg. The Niederungsburg is located on the southern edge of the small town of Ziesar, on the eastern bank of the Kobser Bach. Ziesar Castle was the residence of the prince-bishop of the Bishopric of Brandenburg and bishop of the diocese of Brandenburg. Source: Wikipedia

Despite the Slavic name, the town of Ziesar is a newly founded German town (albeit close to a Slavic hill fort). This becomes clear from the grid-like layout of the town and the layout of the town church of St. Crucis, both of which show the characteristics of the German state development in terra slavica. According to tradition, the Slavs were not expelled, but lived in a "Kietz" in today's Petriviertel. St. Crucis, the town church of Ziesar, is located in the center of town, but a little off the main street. Like the town churches in the other two castle towns of Belzig and Wiesenburg and the village church of Wusterwitz, it has a single nave, but has a cruciform floor plan. This building plan, which only occurs four times, is a special feature in Brandenburg, it seems as if it was reserved for settlements that were striving for city rights from the start. In front of the church is the Franciscan monastery, documented for the first time in 1226, which shared the use of the previously built church. However, the monks moved to Brandenburg an der Havel after just a few years. Around 1330 the Franciscan nuns came and built the building that still exists to the west of the church. They also used St. Crucis as a monastery church and took part in the services on the nuns' gallery in the west of the building, which was connected to the monastery by a corridor above what is now the vestibule. After the Reformation, monastic and nunnery orders were dissolved and most monastic buildings disappeared.
