Stop and take moment to remember The Great War.

A beautiful and tranquil lake, high on Exmoor. It's around a mile's walk from the YHA layby on the B3358, but well worth it. The pond is a great spot for wild swimming, amongst the lillies in the beautiful deep red peat-infused water.

This is a Bronze Age bowl barrow in private ownership that used to serve as a boundary marker for Exmoor Forest.

Right between Chains Barrow and Wood Barrow, you'll find this artificial lake from 1830, formed by the headwaters of the River Barle. An ideal spot to stop for lunch or even dip your feet in to cool off.

Chains Barrow is only 32 meters lower in elevation than Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on Exmoor. The trig point is surrounded by a fence and is located just above a Bronze Age bowl barrow.

This church in Barton Town has very ancient elements, such as its tower from the 16th century, but others, like the nave and chancel, underwent restoration on two occasions in the mid-19th century, as happened with many churches during that time.

Here you will find this beautiful packhorse bridge that crosses the River Bray as it passes through Challacombe.

The shepherds who worked in this remote area of Exmoor lived in this cottage for hundreds of years until the last shepherd family left in the 1960s and the cottage was abandoned.

This Bronze Age barrow sits at an elevation of 480 meters above sea level, right on the boundary dividing the counties of Devon and Somerset. It is recognized as a Scheduled Monument by both counties.

The official source of the river Exe, easily locatable by the stone bearing its name over which the small trickle flows from the hillside beyond.

Lovely swimming or lunch stop not far from Chains Barrow trig point.

This trig point is only 32m lower than Dunkery Beacon, though with a much less distinctive hilltop. In the far distance, you can see Hartland Point and Lundy. It is enclosed within a fenced off area.

Officially a lot of footpath and bridleway. Either push or go on days when nobody else does and animals are far away.

Beautiful freshwater swimming spot on the top of Exmoor, accessible from the Tarka Trail and a variety of other paths. There is also a tunnel that you can go through for some extra adventure!

Brilliant section, just be careful to check the route to get to this segment as from some directions it's a tough ride over fields to the start of this segment.

This small church is situated in a remote and rural setting. The church, which is always open to visitors, is a peaceful and quiet refuge. There has been a church on this site for more than 500 years, but the current incarnation dates to the 15th century. The whole of the church was restored in 1881.

One of the most perfect bits of trail I've found on Exmoor, such a great section of trail. Compact, well drained, easy gradient, making for an enjoyable climb (heading south), or a very fun descent! It feels pretty remote, and civilisation is easily forgotten as you follow the meandering river. Note that the 'path' to the north is barely traceable, although the open moorland makes it easy to navigate in the general direction, and can be tough going when wet.
