The ascent from Bernbeuren to the Auerberg through the Feuerstein Gorge and the adjoining Jägersteig trail is a popular hike in the western Pfaffenwinkel region. The wildly romantic lower section of the trail mostly follows the stream, while further up it frequently crosses small footbridges from one side of the stream to the other.

The rooty Jägersteig trail follows the Feuerstein Gorge on the way to the summit of the Auerberg. Along the trail, there are also wonderful views of the Allgäu, Tannheim, and Ammergau Alps.

Originally, an observatory was supposed to be built here in 1772 by order of Elector Max III Joseph. However, it became the oldest continuously staffed mountain observatory in the world, entering operation in 1781. Weather data was collected for a long time by the canons and priests of the pilgrimage church before being transferred to the German Weather Service (DWD) in the mid-20th century, which still operates it today. The observatory is not open to visitors, but offers a beautiful view and numerous information panels provide information about various aspects of the weather, climate, and the observatory. The observatory tower, with its white, spherical dome, is visible from far away in all directions from the valley.

The Hoher Peißenberg and the pilgrimage church of the Assumption of Mary at the top of the mountain are located on the Way of St. James from Munich to Lindau or, alternatively, Bregenz. On the 16-stage route of this Way of St. James, the Hoher Peißenberg marks the end of stage 5 from Raisting and the start of stage 6 to Rottenbuch. Those who still feel like it in Lindau or Bregenz can then continue their pilgrimage through Switzerland, France, and Spain to Santiago de Compostela, and beyond on the Camino Finisterre to the "end of the world."
