The Brünnstein is a striking mountain in the Bavarian Prealps, located west of Oberaudorf in the Rosenheim district. At 1,634 meters, it may not be a giant, but it offers impressive views and a true mountain experience – ideal for hikers, climbers, and nature lovers. The Brünnstein is part of the Mangfall Mountains and rises just north of the Austrian border. From its summit, a magnificent view opens up over the Inn Valley, the Zillertal and Kitzbühel Alps, and as far as the Kaiser Mountains. The contrast between the gently forested slopes in the north and the rocky, rugged summits is particularly charming.

The Dr. Julius Mayr Trail is one of the most famous climbs up the Brünnstein (1,634 m) and begins directly at the Brünnsteinhaus. It was named after Dr. Julius Mayr, an alpine pioneer and mountaineer from Rosenheim who championed the development of hiking trails in the Kaiser Mountains. The trail is largely secured with cable ropes and offers an alpine character with safe climbing sections. Surefootedness and a head for heights are essential.

From the Brünnsteinhaus, the Dr. Julius Mayr Trail, secured by a cable car, leads through impressive mountain scenery up to the Brünnstein summit (1,634 m). This historic trail, named after the Rosenheim physician and alpine pioneer Dr. Julius Mayr, was established at the beginning of the 20th century and remains one of the most beautiful climbs on the Brünnstein. The trail runs over rocky passages, mountain pine slopes, and secured rock steps, requiring surefootedness and a head for heights. The short sections equipped with cable cars lend the tour a touch of alpine character without being overwhelming. At the summit, hikers are treated to a unique panoramic view of the Inn Valley, the Wilder Kaiser Mountains, and the Chiemgau Alps—as well as the striking little Brünnstein Chapel, picturesquely perched on the rock.

The Große Brünnberg (1328 m) is only 15 minutes from the Brünnsteinhütte and is easy to reach. It is decorated with a monument in honor of the former treasurer of the Rosenheim Alpine Club section, Ludwig Steiner, which was inaugurated on August 11, 1901. The view to the south is, like that from the Brünnsteinhaus, fantastic.

The Wendelsteinbahn starts in Brannenburg in the Inn Valley. It is a rack railway with adhesion sections and takes passengers to the Wendelstein. The railway covers a distance of 19 km and overcomes an altitude difference of over 1,880 meters.
