This beautiful cathedral was originally built as a church in the early 13th century and became a cathedral for the newly established Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich in 1914. It has some beautiful characteristics including a large rose window, detailed stone carvings, fantastic gardens and the notable Abbey Gate.

Would have been amazing in its day but now it’s just a bit of ruined masonry on a busy road into Bury, opposite a Ford garage and next to a Tesco warehouse. Sic transit gloria.

Genteel market town with plenty of scenic buildings and cafes but the one-way system can be a bit tortuous to navigate.

Lovely spit for a coffee stop or lunch. If you're lucky you can pop into the cathedral and hear the choir practicing!

The imposing square cubicle building of Abbey Gate links the abbey gardens with the rest of the city. Completed around 1353 it is richly decorated and makes for an impressive entrance.

Bury St. Edmunds Corn Exchange has been a real landmark building since it opened in 1862. It is now the site of a Wetherspoons pub. The building was refurbished ensuring that the majority of original features remained intact, at least on the exterior!

The hospital of Saint Saviour is a little oasis of history on the busy Thornham Road / A1101 out of Bury St. Edmunds. The hospital of St. Saviour, without the north gate, was begun by Abbot Samson about the year 1184, but it was not finished nor fully endowed until the time of King John. It was originally founded for a warden, twelve chaplain priests, six clerks, twelve poor men, and twelve poor women.

This rather square cubicle building links the abbey gardens with the rest of the city. Though there is another entry to the gardens behind the church this one is way more impressive and provides the stronger contrast to the abbey ruins behind.

The most dominant building in the city centre - it kind of looks a bit our of place given the surroundings.
