The Residenzplatz is a work of art, surrounded by magnificent house facades, the proud Residenz, and the Gothic cathedral choir. It is considered one of the most beautiful Baroque squares north of the Alps. Its focal point is the Wittelsbach Fountain, whose rippling water cascades further enhance the Mediterranean flair of the Residenzplatz. The Residenzplatz was once called "Unter den Krämern" (Under the Merchants): Until 1712, the Kramhaus, the city's large warehouse, stood here. It was demolished to make way for the construction of the New Episcopal Residence. Bishop Lamberg, for whom the Old Residence had become too small for his large court, commissioned its construction. The Wittelsbach Fountain was built in 1903: With it, the city created a memorial to commemorate 100 years of its membership in Bavaria. Two other fountains had already stood here: first, a draw fountain, then a Marienbrunnen (Mary's Fountain) with a stone Madonna statue. The Wittelsbach Fountain, built in the Baroque style, was designed by the Munich sculptor Jakob Bradl. It also depicts Mary on the tall central column. At her feet are three small angels representing Passau's three rivers: Angel "Danube" carries ears of corn in her hair, Angel "Ilz" is adorned with pearls, and Angel "Inn" wears a Tyrolean hat. The bust of the local poet Emerenz Meier, known far beyond Germany's borders, depicts her body from her head to just above her waist. Born in Schiefweg in 1874, the woman is depicted in her early 30s, at the time when Emerenz Meier decided to emigrate to America. She is dressed in traditional costume, consisting of a long-sleeved, high-necked blouse with ruffles at the front and a fitted top with a hint of a peplum. The depiction of Emerenz Meier is located in the immediate vicinity of the former "Zum Koppenjäger" inn on Bräugasse, where she worked as a landlady at the beginning of the 20th century. Furthermore, the statue faces slightly west, as Emerenz Meier emigrated to the USA to join her family after failing to establish an artists' bar in Passau. She embarked on this journey by ship from Rotterdam, which is why the bust was placed directly on the water, in this case the Danube. She also turns her back on the Bavarian Forest, her homeland. However, to emphasize her connection to her Bavarian roots, the bust was placed on a pedestal made of Bavarian granite. The bust was erected in 2008 to mark the 80th anniversary of the death of the highly controversial local poet. This project was funded by the Soroptimist International Club of Passau, which wanted to immortalize for posterity a prominent example of an emancipated woman who was ahead of her time. The Emerenz Meier bust is a bust located on the Donaukai in Passau, which shows this well-known local poet dressed in classical costume. The two meter high and 30 centimeter wide sculpture is made of cast bronze, made using the lost wax process, patinated, waxed and polished and was made by the Biberg artist Christine Wagner.

Emerenz Meier lived around 100 years ago and was a very gifted literary figure, but also mostly quite poor, who had to struggle for her existence. She expressed this in the following quatrain about some great German poets: "If Goethe had had to make soups, salt dumplings, Schiller had to wash pans, Heine had to sew what he had criticized, scour rooms, and kill bedbugs, Alas, these gentlemen, none of them would have become great poets." (Emerenz Meier)
