Northwest of Hals, an artificial log-driving tunnel was built to shorten the route for timber that would otherwise have to be floated down the long Ilz loop. But behind the bronze face lies more than just a poetic legacy – it is a monument to a woman who was far ahead of her time. ✒️ Who was Emerenz Meier? Born in 1874 in the Bavarian Forest, Emerenz Meier was a regional poet, innkeeper, and political activist who sharply criticized social injustices and was not afraid to speak uncomfortable truths. Her texts reflect the lives of ordinary people, their longing, their anger – and their hope. The sculpture depicts Meier in traditional dress, cast in bronze using the lost-wax process. She gazes across the Danube – to the place where she once left her homeland to emigrate to the USA. The location was deliberately chosen: near the former inn "Zum Koppenjäger," which she once ran. The granite base comes from the Bavarian Forest – a silent nod to her origins. The initiative for its erection came from the Soroptimist International Club Passau, which thus set a precedent on the 80th anniversary of the poet's death: for female self-determination, for critical thinking, for cultural memory.
