The linden tree, likely already present at the founding of the New Town and later commonly called the thousand-year-old linden, was a popular subject for artists and photographers. It was also the main subject of the oldest known view of the town, dating from 1689, entitled "Tiliae famosae" (the famous linden tree). The linden tree was the town's emblem, which is why it was long known as Neuenstadt an der Linde (New Town by the Linden Tree).
