この「ファティマ礼拝堂」は聖母マリアに捧げられています。ポルトガルのファティマの町にちなんで名付けられました。そこでは、1917年（第一次世界大戦中）にマリアが数人の羊飼いの子供たちに数回出現しました。聖母マリアは子供たちに3つの秘密を明らかにしました。教皇ヨハネ・パウロ2世は、1981年5月13日（ファティマでの最初の聖母出現の記念日）に彼に向けられた暗殺未遂事件からの生還を、そこで聖母マリアのおかげだと信じていました。彼をほぼ殺害した弾丸は、後にファティマの聖母像の王冠に奉納物として組み込まれました。
