Great views from Claybushill, so peaceful

Fantastic views over Cambridgeshire

A great ride through the RSPB area but be aware there is only one main route north/south that bikes are permitted. Brilliant area with cafe for a coffee and cake recharge!

The Lodge is a nature reserve managed by the RSPB. It's the largest stretch of heathland in Bedfordshire. Important species that can be seen here include Hobbies, Nightjars, Ravens, Common Lizards and Natterjack Toads. There are also areas of grassland and woods, important habitat for other species. There is a visitor centre, shop and cafe.

This is a long, straight off-road path with changing surfaces (gravel, singletrack) between Ashwell and Melbourn, which is part of the Icknield Way. It is not particularly scenic, but you can get that continuing westward toward Letchworth.

Massive ruts from 4x4. Avoid unless you like falling off or pushing your bike

Scenic yes, but I do not recall any gravel. It did tend to be quite muddy in parts in late-October.

Fun to descend. Just watch out for those ruts.

One of my regular stops for coffee. New cafe open soon! You can cycle through the middle of the reserve - it’s a bridleway. Also along one edge from the cafe/shop to the station. Most paths closed to cycles due to ground nesting birds.

A tough little climb if you're coming from the north, lasting about 1km with maximum gradients of 12%. If you're going down the other way, this is a really fun downhill section and you can pick up quite a bit of speed!

Great straight route, quite bumpy, alot divets. Ideal if you suspension to soak up the bumbs

It's a long way up, especially on a loaded bike. Hard terrain and probably worth going that little bit further north to reach the Icknield Way access from the main road.

Great place to ride through and stop for a drink

Climbing up from Royston is a decent workout, never done the opposite way but that would be quick descent.

I had a loose crank and was able to limp here to borrow a tool to tighten it up!

Get into a steady pace and enjoy the scenery from which ever way you approach. I love this area and no matter what season or time of day, it's always stunning.

Follow the track from Ermine Street and turn left immediately before the railway bridge. The first part of the track is quite rough and can be muddy, so care needed, but it soon levels out for a great ride to Ashwell.

Went and scouted this as it looked like a footpath on the map but it's actually a "Green Wheel" cycleway, very little gradient. If you live in Biggleswade, it's a good way to get down to Jordan's Mill.
