The Oxford Botanic Garden is the oldest in the world, founded in 1621. It has multiple areas dedicated to certain plant types (dependent on time of year). It also has permanent subtropical greenhouses with a wide variety of exotic cactii and jungle species. There is a great coffee and cake van on the premises, to complete the visit.

Lovely long flat stretch of running along the Shotover Plain, accompanied by soaring views across the Oxfordshire countryside.

Shotover Country Park is a beautiful greenspace to the east of Oxford; perfect for hiking and summer picnics. This area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for its important wildlife habitats, so follow any guidance you see on signs. Free to use, the plain and parkland are home to some incredible views of Oxford's many spires.

Probably best visited in the summer as not much about when we visited in early December. Costs about £4 to get in - best to Book on line at busy times.

XC trails, 3 or 4 short downhill tracks and a jump zone.

The ancient Shotover Oak (Quercus robur) fell on 13th of July 2015 after a severe drought, having survived much turmoil including the decimation of the Royal Forest by both Royalist and parliamentary armies in the siege of Oxford 1644-46. The new shoots on the base of its trunk are guarded from rabbits and deer by a chestnut palling fence. Hopefully this ancient oak will rise again in time.
