The lessons of the past have shown that the immediate proximity to busy roads leads to increased maintenance costs for wooden bridges, as the combination of spray mist, de-icing salts and exhaust gas cocktails damages the junctions of the individual wooden rods and their connecting structures. A pure steel structure was not an option, as the risk of sparks, particularly in fog, appeared to be too high due to the numerous high-voltage lines in the area. For this reason, the line operator rejected steel as a material, and the choice fell on reinforced concrete as the ideal material for exposed locations such as this.
