Epic descent into the fields..

A great area to visit if you like short, sharp hills. Very scenic and pretty quiet.

Nestled in a serene valley above the river Chater, this grand Tudor house was originally commissioned by Thomas Cromwell on the site of a former priory. Cromwell acquired the estate during the Dissolution of the Monasteries but enjoyed it only briefly before his execution in 1540. Known as Launde, indicating a clearing in the Rutland forest, the house currently serves as a Christian retreat and conference centre for the Leicester and Peterborough dioceses of the Church of England.

Fabulous Church with some very old features. Usually open. Belton-in-Rutland was a settlement in the Leighfield forest which explains it's precise square layout, with the houses used like wagon trains circled around a clearing to protect livestock

The Exeter Arms is a lovely drinking pub (no sign of food!) and we were given a warm welcome by the Host, who was unaware of the Pubs lofty status as the highest in Rutland. We both enjoyed a very fine pint of “Inclined Plane” from the local Langton Brewery.

If something seems familiar to you about St.Peter's church in Brooke, it could just be that you're a fan of the 2005 adaptation of Pride & Prejudice, in which it was used for filming scenes as Mr. Collins' church.

If you're looking for something substantial, unfortunately no trace of the original priory buildings survive, only earthworks are left. Some fragments of the original buildings are thought to have been used in the present sixteenth century (privately owned) house, called "Brooke Priory". The Brooke Reliquary is a small casket that dates from the 13th Century. It originates from the workshops in Limoges, France and is believed to have held a saint's relics. The reliquary was discovered c.1805, after years of being concealed on the site of Brooke Priory, when building work was carried out in the cellar of Priory House. It is now on display in Rutland County Museum in Oakham.

Uppingham is a delightful little market town, filled with honey coloured stone buildings. Uppingham School has been providing education since 1584 and houses one of the largest private theatres in the country.
