Rudyard Kipling's estate in East Sussex is a wonderful place that is managed and maintained by the National Trust. Here you can stroll through the orchard, the vegetable garden and the formal garden. Then you can visit the house from 1634 and the old mill, where Kipling had a generator installed early on to supply the house with electricity. This is rather a lowlight than a highlight. We went in April and we were stuck in the mud. There is no path at all, just mud and thorns and barbed wire. It was a catastrophe walking there even with proper waterproof boots. As it had been sunny for quite a while, I assume this 'path' will be like that 9 months a year. So do yourself a favour and don't go there. If it was dry it could have been beautiful, I have to admit.

A very masculine house, low ceilings and quite dark. Book lovers will get their money's worth! The garden is famous for its pear trees, and now in April the tulips are blooming beautifully. We didn't find the mill particularly interesting - even though it is highly praised - but the house and garden were beautiful.

Nice little village that you can walk to from Bateman's across the fields. Or vice versa. The pub, set back from the main road, has a lovely beer garden!
