⛪ St. Catherine's Church, Brielle: The Unfinished Giant The Sint-Catharijnekerk (St. Catherine's Church) is not only the landmark of the historic fortified town of Brielle, but also an impressive testament to medieval ambition. Had it been completed as planned, it would be one of the largest churches in the Netherlands today. Why a stop here is worthwhile: The "stump" tower: Even from afar, you can see the striking tower without a spire. Due to a lack of funds in the 15th century, it remained at a height of 57 meters. This gives the church its unique, almost defiant silhouette. The view: During the season, you can climb the 317 steps of the tower. At the top, you'll be rewarded with a fantastic panorama of the star-shaped fortifications, the harbor, and the expansive polder landscape. The current white lighthouse on Koningin Wilhelmina Boulevard dates from 1923 and replaced a wooden tower from the 19th century. With six stories, 108 steps, a lighthouse height of over 33 meters, and built of brick and reinforced concrete, it is a distinctive building. From spring to the end of October, you can visit the tower independently every Sunday between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
