The "Bassewitz fountain" was inaugurated in 2007 based on a design by the artist Jan Witte-Kropius for the 770th anniversary of the town of Kyritz. The depiction of the brave Kyritz women who are said to have poured hot porridge over the head of the robber baron Bassewitz is a successful realization of the artist's idea and the Bassewitz legend. The Bassewitz fountain was awarded the "Monument of the Month" by the AG Historische Stadtkerne des Landes Brandenburg in October 2007. The current Bantikow Castle dates from 1906. Even before this new building, there was a castle or fortress on the knight's seat of Bantikow, which had existed since the early 14th century. However, this older building no longer existed at the beginning of the 20th century, which is why the new building in the neo-baroque style was built directly on top of the older core. Bantikow Castle is currently a privately run child and youth welfare facility.

This is the story of a miraculous salvation. A monster tries to run over the rich Hanseatic city of Kyritz twice, but he fails and loses his head as a result. The legend of the Mecklenburg robber baron Kurt von Bassewitz is told in Kyritz and is still kept alive today in medieval spectacles. Finally, it ends gloriously for the people of Kyritz: they defended their defensive walls stubbornly and with a lot of luck in 1381 and again in 1411. The robber baron's first attack in 1381 failed due to bitter resistance from the citizens. But Bassewitz wanted revenge. In July 1411 he surrounded the city again and tried to take it from behind. To do this, he secretly had a tunnel dug under the defensive wall, through which he wanted to crawl into the city at bedtime. But the Kyritzers, who had been warned, were already waiting for him, poured hot gruel over his helmet and beheaded Bassewitz with his own sword.

The fountain on the Kyritz market square – it is called “Bassewitzbrunnen” – is a beautiful addition to the historic city center. It refers to the Bassewitz legend and is a reminiscence of the pumps and water barrels that used to be there.
